Ground Branch
YUAS is not solely comprised of those training to become pilots and navigators; the University Air Squadron offers unrivalled opportunities for personal development, below is an outline of the other branches that students can apply for:
Medical Branch (Doctor)
Medics participate fully in the life of the squadron and regularly take part in expeditions for example sailing, skiing and walking.
In addition there are chances to further your training and experience of medicine. Opportunities for work experience are diverse and medics have been attached to medical centres at a range of stations and have shadowed medical officers at hospitals. Through attachments and acquaintance visits there is unrivalled opportunity to see how medicine in the RAF works. Being on the University Air Squadron also offers medical students the chance to study aviation medicine as an integral part of the medical course.
Medical Officers in the Royal Air Force have varying roles including duties on RAF bases, specialisations in hospitals and providing the care for deployed troops through the tactical medical wing.
Intelligence
The RAF has its own dedicated intelligence branch. Officers of the branch are involved with imagery analysis and briefing duties for aircrew, politicians and commanders. Training is carried out at Chicksands in Bedfordshire and lasts 6 months, with a further 6 months for imagery analysts. Continuous learning is encouraged within the branch, and many courses are available. With the UAS, intelligence sponsored students have the opportunity to work with real time intelligence material, in conjunction with a "mentor" responsible for the students vocational training during their time with the UAS. In addition to the vocational aspect of the branch, intelligence students participate in a wide variety of the squadron's other activities.
RAF Regiment
The RAF Regiment is the elite ground defence force of the Royal Air Force. Tasked with the all round defence of airfields and aircraft deployed in the field, the Regiment uses the latest technology available including the BAe Rapier FSC Surface-to-Air Missile systems, currently the most advanced system of its type in the world. Sponsored students on the UAS have to date enjoyed placements with the Regiment, both in the UK and abroad. Hands on experience is encouraged where possible for the students, giving them a unique perspective into the day to day operations of a front-line combat unit. Currently, the branch is male only, but the future may see a move to both sexes operating as RAF Regiment personnel.
Engineering
The engineering branch is one of the most advanced parts of the RAF, with work on multi-million pound aircraft with the latest systems and controls meaning that there is always the pressure to get it right, but then the buzz at the end when this is achieved. An engineer has to have many strings to his bow and the RAF can bring that to its full potential from the hands on engineering to the man-power management. At university level there is much experience and knowledge to be gained from the various placements at home and abroad. This experience can be obtained from the interaction with the branch as a whole this means that you get to be a part of both teams the UAS and the Engineering branch.
Physical Education
The Physical Education specialisation is responsible for the physical well being of all service personnel, without whom the force could fail to operate. A Physical Education Officer within this branch can specialise in many areas, such as parachute jump instruction, remedial instruction and adventurous training. Involvement within this section as a member of the UAS is centred around assistance in running of station PEd flights. The station gym is the centre of activity for sport, training and expeditions run from the station.
If your branch is not here, we have not forgotten you, however this is still under construction.
